Review Hilda Lessways

Oh, Hilda Lessways – what a fascinating, frustrating, and ultimately rewarding read! As the second book in Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger trilogy, I went in with some expectations, especially after enjoying the first installment. And while I’ll admit, the sheer amount of overlap with Clayhanger – revisiting familiar scenes and characters from Edwin's perspective – did occasionally feel a bit repetitive, it was ultimately valuable. It gave a much-needed other side to the story, providing crucial context and depth to relationships I'd only previously seen through Edwin's eyes.

Hilda herself is a complex character, and honestly, not always the easiest to like. Bennett doesn't shy away from portraying her flaws; her ambition, her impatience, even her occasional pettiness are all laid bare. But that’s precisely what makes her so compelling. She’s a product of her time, a woman grappling with societal expectations in early 20th-century England, fighting for independence in a world that often tried to confine her. There’s a raw honesty to her struggles, her internal conflicts, and her yearning for something more that resonated deeply. I found myself both sympathizing with her plight and simultaneously questioning her choices – a testament to Bennett's skill in creating a truly three-dimensional character.

The setting, the Five Towns, is wonderfully evoked, almost a character in itself. Bennett's descriptions paint a vivid picture of life in this industrial region, capturing the atmosphere, the social dynamics, and the very essence of the place. It's easy to feel immersed in this world, experiencing the everyday life and the dramatic shifts that occur within it.

While the short, almost scene-like chapters might seem unusual at first, I found them remarkably effective. They kept the pace brisk, mirroring the quick changes in Hilda’s emotional landscape and allowing for moments of both intense action and thoughtful reflection. It's a style that perfectly suits the novel's focus on character development and internal conflict.

However, it's crucial to acknowledge that this book works best as part of the larger trilogy. Reading it in isolation would likely diminish the impact, as the interweaving narratives and recurring characters add significant richness and understanding to the whole story. Coming into this book having already read Clayhanger was definitely an advantage, adding depth and layers to the narrative I wouldn't have appreciated otherwise. Overall, Hilda Lessways is a captivating study of a woman's struggle for independence, a powerful addition to a brilliant trilogy, and a worthwhile exploration of a period in history and the complexities of human relationships that continues to resonate today. It's a book that will stay with you long after you've turned the final page.
